Blue Stars

Why are airplanes flag label on the back (blue stars) on the right side of the machine and correct on the left side?
A new job has significantly increased air time and I've noticed (especially Northwest Airlines) fly that flag displayed properly on the left side of the plane back and consistently on the right side.
